(An outdoor area at the Secret Hideout of the Forty Thieves, late at night. Shai enters.)
Shai: I still can’t believe this is real! Someone pinch me! Simply finding the hideout was a stroke of luck, but to be given the trial? To pass the trial?! I still can’t quite believe it!
(Balthazar enters upstage, glowering at Shai)
Balthazar: Why don’t you shout about it a little louder? I’m not sure the City Watch could hear you.
Shai: Oh! Right. Sorry, Balthazar, I should be more careful about that. I’m looking forward to working with you and everyone else, I hope we’ll get along.
Balthazar: I too once dreamed of the impossible, when I was young and stupid.
Shai: Look, I know we got off on the wrong foot, but we’re both members of the Forty Thieves now.
Balthazar: Oh are we? You don’t even know what it means to be a Thief.
Shai: I passed the-
Balthazar: The Leader’s little test, yes. But I have an examination of my own. (Draws)
Shai: What are you doing? Remember the Honors Balthazar, the Forty are not to fight one another!
Balthazar: How convenient, then, that I don’t consider you one of us!
(Balthazar attacks, they fight. Shai gets the better of Balthazar and holds him at weapon point)
Balthazar: It would violate the Honors, you wouldn’t dare-
Shai: Well that all depends; am I among the Forty… or am I not?
Balthazar: (Considers for a moment) Very well… Brother/Sister (dependent on Shai’s presentation)
Shai: Good. Glad we could resolve that.
